The old adage that 'sex sells' goes back to the earliest days of advertising. In the early 1900's the images of beautiful ladies were used to sell many tobacco products.
Then in the 1920's it became fashionable for women to smoke and for the first time manufacturers targeted this new wave of female customers with carefully tailored products and advertising.
